We are not going to argue that expensive is automatically better. There are good crews in this county that charge less than we do and do fine work.
But there is a specific failure pattern behind quotes that come in at half the going rate, and it is worth understanding, because the consequences do not land on the contractor. They land on you.
The insurance problem, spelled out
A crew shows up and drops a limb through your roof. Or through the neighbour's roof.
If that crew carries liability insurance, their insurer pays. If they do not, you are trying to collect from a company that likely has no assets, possibly no registered business, and quite often no fixed address. In practice, you eat it.
Your own home insurance may cover the damage, and it may also decline on the basis that you hired an uninsured contractor. Either way it will probably raise your premium. Best case here is a claim you did not need to make. More on how coverage works in does home insurance cover tree removal in Ontario.
The WSIB piece, which is worse
If a worker gets hurt on your property and the company that sent him has no WSIB coverage, there is a real possibility that liability comes back to the homeowner as the party who engaged them.
Consider what tree work involves. Chainsaws, chippers, climbing at height, controlled felling of several tonnes of wood. This trade has one of the higher serious-injury rates in Ontario. It is not a hypothetical risk category.
Ask for the WSIB clearance certificate. It is a document, it is free for the company to obtain, and a legitimate operator will send it over without being asked twice. Hesitation is the answer.
The specific damage we get called to fix
We do a fair bit of remedial work in this county cleaning up after cheap jobs. The recurring ones.
Topped trees
Cutting the main leaders back to stubs to reduce height. It is fast, it looks like progress, and it destroys the tree. What grows back is a mass of weakly attached shoots that are more hazardous in ten years than the original tree was, on a trunk that is now decaying from the open cuts. There is no undoing it. If somebody offers to top your maple, that is the whole conversation.
Cedar hedges cut into the wood
Cedar will not regrow from bare brown wood, ever. A crew working fast with the trimmer set too deep can permanently strip one face of a hedge in an afternoon. We have seen twenty years of growth ruined in LaSalle and Tecumseh this way, and there is genuinely nothing to be done except replace the plants. See when to trim a cedar hedge.
Lawn destroyed
Driving a truck or a skid steer across a wet clay lawn in Essex County leaves ruts you will be dealing with all season, plus compaction that damages the roots of the trees you kept. Cheap crews drive in because carrying wood out by hand is the expensive part.
Half-finished jobs
Tree down, wood left in a pile, stump still there, crew gone. Getting somebody back to finish is harder than it should be when there is no business address.
Oaks pruned in July
In Essex County that is an oak wilt exposure. Beetles find fresh cuts within hours, and the disease is established across the river in Michigan. A crew that does not know the pruning window does not know enough. See oak wilt in Essex County.
Butchered removals near foundations
Large trees close to a house in clay soil need thinking about, because taking one out changes how the soil around the footing holds water. Not a reason never to do it, a reason to do it deliberately.
The storm-season door-knockers
Every time a significant system comes through Windsor-Essex, crews appear from outside the region, work door to door for a week or two, take deposits, and leave.
Some are fine. Some take a deposit and never come back. Some do damage and are three provinces away by the time you notice.
The tells
No local address, no local phone number, magnetic signs on the truck, cash only, full payment up front, pressure to decide immediately, and no paperwork of any kind. Any one of those on its own might be nothing. Three of them together is not.
We know the pressure is real when there is a tree on your roof and somebody is standing in your driveway offering to fix it today. Ask for the insurance certificate anyway. Thirty seconds.
The five questions that sort it out
- Can I see your liability insurance certificate and WSIB clearance number?
- Is the stump included, and is debris haul-away included?
- Did you walk to the tree?
- Who is responsible if something gets damaged, and what happens then?
- Is your quote in writing with the scope itemized?
Someone who answers all five cleanly is probably fine, whatever they charge. Someone who deflects on the first one should be off your list regardless of price.
What cheap sometimes legitimately means
To be fair about it, a lower quote is not automatically a warning sign. Sometimes it means:
- Winter scheduling, when crews are quieter. Genuinely cheaper and there is nothing wrong with it.
- You are keeping the wood. Fine if you have a fireplace and somewhere to put it.
- The crew is small, local, properly covered, and has lower overhead than a bigger outfit. That is just a competitive market.
The distinction is whether the saving comes from efficiency and scheduling or from things being left out. Efficiency is worth buying. Missing coverage is a transfer of risk to you, priced as a discount. More on the mechanics in why tree removal quotes vary so much in Windsor.
If you want the boring version
Tree Removal Windsor will send you a liability certificate and a WSIB clearance number before you commit to anything, quote in writing with the scope itemized, and carry the wood out rather than driving across your lawn. We do not top trees and we will not cut a cedar hedge into the wood.
